曹萤,自1998至2002年间在德国埃森大学(现杜伊斯堡-埃森大学)攻读博士学位。其间从事发育生物学研究。于2002年获得博士学位,并以优异成绩毕业(graduated summa cum laude)。在2002至2008年间,在德国乌尔姆大学继续从事胚胎细胞分化的机理研究工作。自2008年起,加入南京大学医学院模式动物研究所,从事胚胎细胞和癌细胞的分化机理研究,揭示在肿瘤的发生发展在复杂性表象下的普遍规律,以及肿瘤和胚胎发育之间的内在统一性:1)肿瘤发生发展的过程是细胞失去原有特性并获得神经干性的过程;2)神经干性是细胞致瘤性和多能性分化潜能的基础,这是由神经细胞状态的进化优势决定的;3)胚胎发育过程中的神经诱导决定胚胎发育,而在出生后动物(包括人)中,一个相似的过程决定肿瘤形成。这些发现不仅揭示了癌细胞的本质特性是神经干性,也将两种关键细胞特性,致瘤性和多能性分化潜能统一起来,也就是将胚胎发育和肿瘤形成统一起来。
